Permaculture (short for permanent agriculture) is a design method for sustainable land use.  Permaculture aims to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with it’s inhabitants.

The 12 major principles of Permaculture can be applied to any environment, at any scale, from dense urban settlements to individual homes, farms or entire regions.  The three over-riding ethics of Permaculture are care of the earth (rebuild natural capital), care of people (wisdom lies within the group) and fair share (take only what we need and share the rest).  While it originally penned as a short form of ‘permanent agriculture’, it now more commonly stands for ‘permanent culture’, encompassing social and economic systems as well as environmental.

Within a permaculture system work is minimized, ‘wastes’ become resources, productivity and yields increase and environments are restored. Elements in a system are viewed in relationship to other elements, where the outputs of one become the input of another.  Each element performs multiple functions within the system.
